07. Özdemir Erdoğan - Gurbet - 3:15
Not all Turkish music embraced Western ideals. During the 1950’s Turkey saw a large trend towards urbanization as villagers moved to cities looking for a better life. They found crowded places with little opportunity. In ‘Gurbet’ Erdoğan sings of the alienation of the city and yearns for the traditions of village life. Essentially a critique of capitalism, the song reveals a more conservative side of Turkish music.
Postscript: You might recognize this as the source material for the riff from Stephen Malkmus’ ‘Baby C’mon.’
